Keeping your piano clean

In addition to tuning and regulation something I am often asked by clients is how best to keep their piano clean.

In the main they’re remarkably easy to keep clean with many in store products perfectly fine to use on the case keys and brass pedals.

To clean the keys over the counter disinfectants are okay provided they do not contain bleach based disinfectant. It is important to remember, follow up with a dry cloth or tissue paper and never leave any liquids on the piano or keys.

On the case of the piano warm water applied to a microfibre cloth to wipe down the piano is okay and effective. It is important a microfibre cloth or similar is used as this prevents minor scratches on the case work.

It is important to never place plant pots, mugs cups or glasses on the piano as this will cause stains or damage to the case. Equally covering the piano in picture frames is fine provided you help your piano tuner take them off before tuning (mainly as I fear dropping a precious photo of yours).

It is best to avoid dusting or trying to clean inside a piano. This is something I carry out during my standard tuning service and ensure the piano action and keys move freely every time the piano is played.
